Reclaiming Potential | November 7-14th, 2024 | Edgar Heap of Birds Family Gallery located inside Chalmers Hall at the University of Kansas

Reclaiming Potential is a sculpture exhibition about paint. I’m interested in discovering how self-sufficient this material can be while allowing material agency and the opportunity to fail or prevail. Paint skins are constructed by painting, pouring, and paint mâché, a process that reimagines papier mâché by replacing the paper with a thin, dry piece of paint and the adhesive with wet paint. I use reclaimed materials with unknown histories to ensure uncertainty and irregularity. The skeletal armatures that coexist with the paint skins are inspired by bodily gestures, daily observations from my surroundings, and/or a feeling.  Rather than the paint being used metaphorically, it’s through the material pursuit and formal explorations of line, form, and color that narratives of vulnerability, resilience, and personal experience coincide. Color and form lean into ambiguity to offer a variety of interpretations while titles offer an insight to my own ruminations throughout the process and outcome.
